Kids Free Fishing Day – Saturday, June 20

Kids Free Fishing Day 2013More than 500 young anglers are expected at the ninth annual Kids’ Free Fishing Day, Saturday, June 20 at Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Campus.

A new feature this year is a dedicated hour of fishing for individuals of all ages with special needs; they are invited to fish from 9-10 a.m. From10 a.m. to 2 p.m. kids of all abilities are invited to join in the fun, accompanied by an adult. Under the supervision of the Department of Natural Resources, 750 rainbow trout 10 inches or longer will be stocked for the event. Fishing rods, reels, and bait will be provided. Children may also bring their own fishing gear. Volunteers will be on hand to register anglers, help with fishing instruction and clean the fish.

The Great Lakes Children’s Museum will host a free fish painting activity for kids waiting to fish. There will also be a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter rescue demonstration. Free pizza, courtesy of Little Caesar’s and Orchard Creek Senior Living and Healthcare, will be provided. Parking is available at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus, located just east of the Holiday Inn on U.S. 31.

Kids Free Fishing Day The event is sponsored by NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute, Grand Traverse Area Sportfishing Association, Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Great Lakes Children’s Museum, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Traverse City Rotary Clubs, and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City.
